SET TVG Field Manual

Everything a TVG operator does, in the order it gets done — from opening the rack to packing it on the last day. A supervisor will normally be with you for setup, but this manual is written so you can complete every step alone if nobody is available.

The Golden Rule — read this before anything else

It is better to show nothing than to show a wrong graphic.

It does not matter how much pressure your producer, CLOIT, BORNAN, your Sportdata team leader or anyone else puts on you. Showing incorrect data is a major mistake. If you think a graphic is wrong, do not show it — call a TVG supervisor. The final decision on whether a graphic goes to air is yours.

00 Before you touch anything

Check that the kit is yours

Every rack and every transport box carries a sticker with a sport name. Check both stickers the moment the kit reaches you. If the sport does not match yours, you have somebody else’s rack — say so immediately, before you open anything.

Moving the rack

Extend the top grip and roll it like carry-on luggage — but only on flat ground, such as inside a venue. Rolling over rough asphalt shakes the devices inside and can damage them.

Who supports you

Five TVG supervisors cover the Games. Ask in the group at any time — that is what it is for.

Rovers move from venue to venue and, if all goes to plan, will be present for the setup at every TVG station.

01 Build the rack

Open · power · cooling

  1. Open the case. Two latches on the front — slide your fingers underneath and pop them open.

  2. Remove the top lid. Rotate it back until it lifts out of the hinges. Be gentle with the hinges — they bend easily. Put the lid aside; you will not need it again until the final pack-down. The Thunderbolt cable and, on some racks, the mains lead live inside it.

  3. Remove the two side panels. A little pressure and they pop off. On at least one side a cable is tethered to the panel — slip a finger under the retaining clip and release it. There are four clips in total.
  4. Connect power. Most racks have a fixed mains lead hanging out of the back. About ten racks instead use a detachable powerCON lead: slide it in, then twist until the lock clicks.

  5. Switch on. Flip the red power switch. You should hear the fans start, see the switch illuminate, see the UltraStudio front panel come up, and see a small indicator light on one device inside.

    • If nothing powers up, either the socket is dead or a connection came loose in transit. Call a supervisor — do not start pulling the rack apart.
  6. Power the laptop and the monitor from mains as well.

02 Connect the signals

Thunderbolt · patch panel · SDI to broadcast · sync

Thunderbolt to the laptop

Port warning

Every Thunderbolt port can be used as USB-C, but not every USB-C port is Thunderbolt. Look for the lightning symbol ⚡ printed next to the port. Most TVG laptops have two adjacent Thunderbolt ports with the symbol between them.

Plug the Thunderbolt cable from the front of the rack into a Thunderbolt port on the laptop. The small indicator light on the UltraStudio should come on. Confirm the laptop sees it: press the Windows key, type Blackmagic Desktop, open Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup, and check that a device is shown. Two racks use a newer UltraStudio model — any device shown is fine. If nothing appears, a connection inside the rack has come loose; call a supervisor.

The patch panel

Every port on the panel is labelled. You will not use all of them.

The broadcast team will hand you at least three SDI cables — key, fill and dirty. They may give you more. The connectors lock: slide the collar over the pin and twist until it is locked. A locked BNC will not pull out; forcing it breaks the cable.

Do this early

Getting connected to broadcast is time critical. The broadcast team are setting up many things at once and need to know about problems as early as possible. As soon as the cables are in, send them a signal — ideally the GFX-connection-test (see section 04) — and confirm with them that both directions work.

Reference signal (“sync”)

Sync is the common clock that keeps all the signals in the OB van aligned. By default we generate our own with the SyncGenerator inside the rack, and that is usually enough.

If the broadcast team insist on supplying sync, they give you an SDI cable:

You must then also re-patch the two cables that run from the SyncGenerator to the UpDownCross devices: unplug them from the SyncGen and plug them into the AJA C10DA instead. (In the guide photos these are the green cables.)

Stream Deck

  1. Snap the two Stream Deck parts together — there is only one way they fit.
  2. Feed the USB-C cable through the hole in the back of the rack and connect it to the USB-C port inside.
  3. Connect the other end to the laptop. Every TVG laptop has two USB-C ports: one is the Thunderbolt link to the rack, the other is for the Stream Deck.

  5. The deck lights up with whatever profile was last loaded. You will import the correct one in section 03.

03 Boot the system

Start order matters — follow it exactly

Why the order matters

If you open OBS before NodeCG, OBS cannot auto-load the graphics — they stay grey and you have to restart OBS or refresh every graphic by hand. And the dashboard’s webservice import only works after SET-OBS is running.

1 · Start NodeCG

All AG26 laptops ship with NodeCG pre-installed. Find NodeCG-Starten.cmd on the desktop and double-click it. (“Starten” is German for “start”.)

Never close this window

A black console window opens. You may minimise it, but never close it. Closing it stops SET TVG completely and you have to start it again from the shortcut. Ignore the error messages in the console — they come from a few unsupported libraries and are known and harmless.

  • The first start takes a while. Later starts take a couple of seconds.
  • run.bat on the desktop is the old way of starting NodeCG. We do not use it at AG26.
  • If NodeCG is missing entirely: Desktop → deploymentSportdata-Wartung-STARTEN.cmd, tick NodeCG and the TVG-relevant options, and execute.

If NodeCG starts but never finishes loading, the Windows public-network firewall is probably still on. Press the Windows key, type firewall, open Firewall & network protection, select the public network, switch it off and confirm the Windows prompt. Then restart NodeCG — it should come up in about two seconds. The laptops were prepared with this off, but it can slip through.

2 · Open the dashboard

Open a Chromium-based browser — Chrome or Edge. Firefox does not work. Go to:

Every single time

Set the Production Bundle and the Sport on every NodeCG start and on every reload of the dashboard. If you skip this, some functions silently stop working.

Once-only settings — Main Workspace

  1. Webservices Base URL. Scroll down to Webservices and replace the address. Point it at whichever laptop runs SET-OBS — usually your own. Keep the URL structure exactly: http://192.168.1.123:8080 or http://localhost:8080.

  3. Event title. With the IP set correctly, press REFRESH next to the event field to pull the name from SET / SET-OBS. If that fails, type it yourself — ask in the element group for the correct wording.

  5. Venue name. Type it manually. The broadcaster will know the venue name; ask in the element group if nobody can tell you.
  6. Crunch auto-show / auto-hide timing. Main Workspace → Graphics config → Crunch.

Daily settings

Set Day, Session Nr, Session Name, Field Of Play and FOP Name every day — or every session, if the session changes.

Then import the webservices: SET TVG PANELS → Webservices. On Matches of Day, click refresh, then click the green save button below. Repeat for Categories.

Save these two and nothing else

Do not save any other webservice — it causes problems later. Most graphics handle their webservices themselves; only Matches of Day and Categories are needed in the dashboard. This only works once SET-OBS is running.

Matches of Day loads every match of the session. You can see them all in the Match Data panel at the top — click the field to expand the list.

3 · Start SET-OBS

Despite the name, SET-OBS has nothing to do with OBS Studio. It receives competition data from CLOIT’s OVR system and converts it into the webservices TVG uses.

  1. Put SET-OBS.zip on the desktop and extract it. Start it with Start-SET-OBS.exe. Select the correct network adapter and install the licence you were given.
  2. Connect to CLOIT’s shared folder. This PC → right-click → Add a network location → click through the dialogue → enter the location CLOIT specifies, in the form \\IP-address\folder-name, e.g. \\192.168.1.123\tvgdata. If it asks for a user and password, ask CLOIT — and tick the box to save the credentials.

  4. Back in SET-OBS, in the connection area, find the new shared folder and add it. SET-OBS always needs a folder called tvgdata.
  5. Find your session and mat by looking inside the shared folder. If the data is not there, SET-OBS cannot find it and you will get an error later — contact CLOIT.
  6. Select your sport and its properties file in the upper area. Taekwondo needs special settings — contact Oscar Morant directly.
  7. Click Start. The status flips from a red Not running to a green Running.

Red means a file is empty or missing. Work through this in order:

  • Is CLOIT’s system still running? They write the data — if they are down, we are down.
  • Is Sportdata’s system still running? Sportdata also adds data to those files.
  • Ask CLOIT whether they forgot to update the files, and ask them to verify the contents.
  • Your presence is required at the TVG station — send someone else from the Sportdata team to check in person. Sportdata are usually closer to CLOIT than you are.
  • If CLOIT are slow, remind them. If they genuinely cannot be faster, delay the graphic or do not show it at all. See the Golden Rule.

4 · Start OBS

Do not update OBS

Newer OBS versions do not properly support key and fill output. If OBS offers an update, choose Skip version. Do not update if your team leader asks you to. Do not update even if Roland Breiteneder asks you to. Only update OBS if a TVG supervisor instructs you to.

Scene collection

Each sport has its own OBS scene collection. It is sent to you before your sport starts, or you build it yourself:

  1. Build it: in the dashboard, Main Workspace → scroll to OBS-scenecollection builder. Select your sport. Leave “include dev background” unticked. Then click Build OBS prefix, Build OBS suffix, and finally Build OBS scene collection. The file lands on the desktop. Generate a new prefix whenever you change sport.

  3. Import it: OBS → Scene CollectionImport… → browse to the desktop → select the collection (its filename carries the creation date) → Import.

  5. Activate it: Scene Collection → click the collection you just imported. If you change sports, just switch the active collection.

Housekeeping

If your scene collection contains graphics you do not use, disable them — especially the crunch graphics belonging to other sports. Unused graphics stay grey in the dashboard and make it harder to spot a real problem.

Go to Tools → DeckLink Output and set, in the top “Output” section:

OBS will never show a Thunderbolt device that was connected while the DeckLink Output window was already open. This is an OBS bug, not ours. Close the DeckLink Output window, then reopen it and the UltraStudio will be there. If it still does not appear after 15–20 seconds, restart OBS.

Before you unplug or shut down

Always stop the DeckLink output before unplugging the UltraStudio or shutting down the laptop. Otherwise the UltraStudio will often not be detected the next time you try to start it. Once the output is running, its settings cannot be changed — stop it first.

Output format

OBS sends 1080p50. The UpDownCross devices and the SyncGenerator convert that to whatever broadcast requires — for AG26 that is expected to be 1080i50. All UpDownCross and SyncGen units should already be set to 1080i50; double-check them anyway. The DIP-switch chart is printed on the underside of each device: a white field means the pin must be set, no white field means the position does not matter. We work this way because OBS has trouble generating interlaced signals.

To change what OBS itself outputs: stop key & fill, then Settings → Video and change the FPS value. That determines which modes appear in the DeckLink Output list.

Write it down

The director sometimes does not know the format — ask the OB van technician. There is usually a general test the day before the first competition; find out the required format before that test. Once you know it, write it down in the element group. That is your insurance if broadcast later reports a format problem.

No transitions

OBS does not need transitions in our use case, and using them is actively harmful. Do not use transitions.

Preview projector

Extend the Windows display (not duplicate). In OBS, right-click the preview → open a projector for Preview → select the Blackmagic device. That preview goes down the HDMI cable to TVG IN · PRV and comes back out on the multiview.

5 · Load the graphics

In the dashboard, go to the GRAPHICS tab (top right). You will see every graphic in the bundle. Grey with a 0 means not loaded; green with a number means loaded in OBS.

  • If you started NodeCG before OBS, the graphics load themselves when OBS opens.
  • Graphics that stay grey are either genuinely unused (every sport has its own crunch, so other sports’ crunch graphics will not load) or failed to load. Ask a supervisor if you are unsure which.
  • If they stay grey because OBS was opened before NodeCG, restart OBS or refresh the graphics manually.

Refreshing manually

  • In OBS: select the graphic source → click Refresh → repeat in every scene you use.

  • On the Stream Deck: the refresh buttons (circular-arrow icons) are on the last page. To refresh everything, press Refresh PRV and Refresh PGM once each.

Don’t spam refresh

Repeatedly hammering the refresh buttons puts a heavy load on both OBS and NodeCG. Press once and wait.

6 · Load the Stream Deck profile

Every sport has its own Stream Deck profile, sent to you before your sport starts.

  1. Stream Deck → settings (gear)Profiles tab.
  2. Open the dropdown at the bottom of the profile list → Import… → select your profile.
  3. Switch to it using the profile dropdown under the device name.

Profiles belong to devices

The Stream Deck software assigns profiles per device. If a different Stream Deck was connected to this laptop before, change the device in the dropdown or your imported profile will not be selectable. Normally you keep your own deck, so this rarely bites.

Customising

You are encouraged to adapt the layout to your own flow — it should be comfortable for you. But work on a duplicate: settings → Profiles → right-click your sport’s profile → Duplicate, then tick Make this my default profile on the copy only. That way the standard layout survives if somebody else has to take over your station.

04 Verify before you go live

Connection test · multiview · full graphics run-through

Understand what you are looking at

SignalWhat it is
KEYTells the broadcaster where the graphic goes — position and transparency. On the multiview it looks like a white silhouette of your graphic.
FILLTells the broadcaster what to show — the graphic itself, in full colour.
DIRTYThe broadcaster’s finished output, graphics included. This is what the world sees, and it is how you know when to show and hide.
PRVYour own preview — what you have staged but not yet sent live.

The two setup graphics

With NodeCG and OBS running, two graphics are already active:

  • Systeminfo (left / Preview) — CPU, RAM, GPU and signal stats for the laptop. Hide it with the eye icon in the OBS sources list if it distracts you.
  • GFX-connection-test (right / Program) — colour bars, a clock and a settings readout. It is invisible when first loaded; show it with the Stream Deck command. Start DeckLink output once the SDI cables are in, and this is what broadcast will see.

Two things about the test graphic

The DeckLink mode shown in the test card is what OBS is outputting, not what actually reaches the broadcaster — OBS should read 1080p50, and the real format is set on the UpDownCross. Also, the test card has a built-in safety: if you show or hide it, it becomes empty and cannot be shown again. Refresh it in the dashboard to get it back.

Before you go live

GFX-connection-test must be hidden or deleted once first-time setup is finished.

Setup is complete when…

  • The broadcast director confirms they receive both KEY and FILL.
  • You receive a dirty feed on your side.
  • Your multiview shows all four quadrants: KEY, FILL, DIRTY and PRV.
  • Your extended screen shows the OBS preview projector.

Test every graphic

Run Show and then Go Live on every graphic you intend to use — from the dashboard or the Stream Deck — and watch how it behaves in OBS. If something behaves unexpectedly, see whether you can spot the cause. If you cannot, or you think it is a bug in the graphic or in NodeCG, contact a SET TVG developer.

The general test

The day before the first competition there should be a general test including broadcast. Be fully set up by then and join it. It exists to:

  • Catch remaining bugs and unintended graphic behaviour on our side;
  • Give the OB van director a feel for the graphics we provide, so day one runs smoother;
  • Prove we can deliver as intended — your insurance if something goes wrong later.

Report in the group that you joined the general test with graphics, and whether there were any issues.

Comms during the show

Either you sit next to the broadcast director and take commands directly, or you sit elsewhere and they give you a headset. Either way you are listening for their show and hide commands while watching the dirty feed.

05 Live operation

The running order of a transmission

  1. Transmission graphic. Before the broadcast starts, show the next-transmission graphic so the IBC knows what you plan to broadcast and when. The producer tells you the time; enter it in the dashboard under Main Workspace → Transmission. Enter local time — conversion to UTC is automatic. Show it at the beginning of the session, and hide it when the timer reaches zero.

  3. Sport title. When the broadcast actually begins, show the sport title — usually for 5 to 10 seconds.

  5. Schedule. Normally next after the sport title.
  6. Everything after that depends on your sport and your producer. Ask your producer for a rundown. If they cannot provide one, contact a supervisor and build one together.
  7. During active play, the crunch is usually the only graphic you are allowed to show. Be careful with full-screen graphics — you cannot block the broadcast whenever you feel like it.
  8. Advancing matches. Matches advance automatically when SET OVR sends “reset all” from the Point Panel (with PSS). Because we use SET-OBS, you may need to advance matches manually — there is a Stream Deck button for this so you do not have to reach for the mouse.
  9. End of transmission. When the broadcast finishes, show the end-of-transmission graphic so the IBC knows your session is over.

  11. Do not pack up yet. The producer may want daily highlights, a melt-reel playout or other graphics. Wait for the producer to confirm you are done.
Terminology

Transmission graphics are sometimes called slates or wipes.

06 Updates & maintenance

Fork · bundles · internet policy

Updating with Fork (the normal way)

  1. When you are told an update is available, open Fork from the desktop.
  2. Top right: three arrows. Click the middle one, Pull. Before pulling there is a small number over the arrow; after a successful pull it is gone.

  4. Fork has two bundles open — set-tvg-server and set-tvg-ag26. Check both.
  5. Reload the graphic affected by the update — Stream Deck, or the dashboard’s GRAPHICS tab. A supervisor will tell you if more needs reloading.

There are also desktop shortcuts that update the bundles (one for the server bundle, one for the Asian Games bundle). Their names are German. They ask for the SSH passphrase ssh4sportdata. If that confuses you, just use Fork.

Requires internet

Updating via Fork needs an internet connection — see the policy below.

Manual bundle replacement (only if a supervisor asks)

  1. Go to the NodeCG folder → bundles. The folders here are the graphic bundles available to you.

  3. Back up the active bundle — rename it with a -OLD suffix.
  4. Unzip the bundle you received into this folder and delete the zip. You should now see e.g. set-tvg-ayg25 and set-tvg-ayg25-OLD.
  5. Restart NodeCG and refresh all graphics for the change to take effect.

If you receive an update for a single graphic it may be just one file, with instructions on where to drop it — then you usually only need to refresh that graphic.

Switching the active bundle

Normally not needed; only for a major change. In the NodeCG folder → cfg → open nodecg.json in a text editor and replace the second bundle name:

Internet policy

During normal TVG operation we should not be connected to the internet. Windows sometimes downloads updates in the background even with the update block enabled — that is a security risk and generally not permitted at the Games. The exceptions are:

  • Updating the set-tvg bundle via Fork;
  • Opening a RustDesk connection for remote support.

07 Shutdown & pack-down

End of day · end of Games

End of each day

  1. Stop the DeckLink output in OBS before anything else.
  2. Shut down the laptop.
  3. Switch off the power to laptop, monitor and rack.
  4. Leave everything connected. Do not unplug cables between days.

Last day — packing the rack

Reverse the setup, carefully.

  1. Power everything down, then disconnect the cables. Return anything you borrowed from the broadcaster.
  2. Refit the side panels. Re-secure the tethered cable into its clip first. On the power side the connector head is thick — ease it in gently and not all the way, because there are devices immediately behind it and forcing it can rip them out when the panel is next removed. A panel that pops slightly proud on one edge is fine, as long as it does not come off completely.

  4. Hook the top lid in on both sides. The hooks do not go all the way around, so seat them gently and check both sides engage. If only one side is hooked and you rotate the lid, the other hinges bend — and then the lid will never fit again.

  6. Check the cables before you close. No cable may sit over the rim on the sides or the lid. A cable trapped between the panel and the lid will be destroyed by the time the rack reaches the office.

  8. Lower the lid gently and close both latches.
  9. Pack the laptops, Stream Deck and monitor back into their own cases, then put everything into the big transport box.
  10. Roll the rack on flat ground only.

08 Troubleshooting

Quick reference under time pressure

TVG
TV Graphics.
GFX
Graphics — an individual graphic, or the graphics system as a whole.
OB Van / OB
Outside Broadcast. The mobile TV production facility where the live broadcast is produced and where your signals land.
IBC
International Broadcast Centre — the main office for broadcast and TVG operations during the Games.
Producer / Director
Decides what is shown and when. Sometimes two people. Talk to them; take their commands.
Rundown
The plan of what should happen during a broadcast, including which graphics appear and roughly when.
Transmission
The period during which the event is broadcast. Usually one session = one transmission.
Slate / Wipe
Other names for graphics that mark the start or end of a transmission.
Sport Title
The graphic identifying the sport at the start of a broadcast.
Crunch
The sport-specific match graphic — timing, score, warnings, rounds, names, nations. During active play this is usually the only graphic allowed.
Full Screen Graphic
A graphic using the whole frame. Handle with care — it blocks the broadcast.
Show
Makes a graphic visible in PRV. Every graphic has its own show command.
Go Live
Promotes the last graphic added to PRV into the live output — PGM, and therefore the broadcast.
Preview / PRV
A graphic or signal staged for the operator only, not on air.
Program / PGM
What is intended to be on air right now.
SDI
The professional video connection used to exchange Key, Fill, Dirty and other signals with broadcast.
Key
Tells the broadcaster where the graphic goes — transparency and masking.
Fill
The visible graphic image, combined with the Key.
Keyer
The function that combines Key and Fill with the video. Broadcast does this, which is why the OBS DeckLink keyer must be set to External.
Clean feed / CLEAN
A video signal without graphics.
Dirty feed / DIRTY
A video signal that already contains graphics — the finished broadcast output.
Multiview / MV
Several signals on one monitor. In the TVG rack: KEY, FILL, DIRTY and PRV.
Reference / Sync
A timing signal that keeps all video equipment aligned. A common clock.
1080p50 / 1080i50
1920×1080 at 50 progressive frames, or 50 interlaced fields, per second. OBS sends 1080p50; AG26 broadcast output is 1080i50.
UltraStudio
The Blackmagic video interface in the rack, connected by Thunderbolt, used by OBS for the Key & Fill output.
UpDownCross
Converts our video output into the format broadcast requires.
Thunderbolt
The high-speed link between laptop and UltraStudio. Not every USB-C port supports it — look for ⚡.
OBS
Open Broadcaster Software. Loads and outputs the graphics.
SET-OBS
Unrelated to OBS Studio. Receives OVR data and converts it into the webservices TVG uses.
NodeCG
The framework running the TVG graphics system — dashboard, graphics, data and controls.
Bundle
A NodeCG package containing the files for a particular version or sport. The server bundle is always required.
Scene Collection
The OBS scenes and sources for a particular sport. Each sport has its own.
Webservice
A connection through which the graphics receive data, such as match and category information.
OVR
On-Venue Results — the system providing competition data. At AG26 this is handled by CLOIT.
Fork
The tool used to download TVG bundle updates. Operators use Pull.
